VYPE.com/Louisville – Assumption’s Alexa Filley has been named the 2013-14 Gatorade® National Volleyball Player of the Year.
Filley is the eleventh Gatorade Kentucky Volleyball Player of the Year to be chosen from Assumption High School in the 19 years the volleyball award has been presented, and the first national volleyball honoree from Kentucky.
According to the Gatorade press release announcing Filley’s selection as the Kentucky Volleyball Player of the Year, “The 5-foot-9 senior setter led the Rockets to a 36-6 record, the state championship and a No. 5 national ranking by PrepVolleyball.com this past season. Filley recorded 1,248 assists, 334 digs, 102 kills, 58 blocks and 41 service aces. A 2013-14 Under Armour Second Team All-American, she was MVP of the state tournament each of the past two seasons and is a two-time First Team All-State selection.”
Filley, who plans to play at Auburn next fall, joins a highly select group of volleyball elite, including the first Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year, Kerri Walsh, of San Jose, California, selected in 1996.
Other Gatorade National Athletes of the Year from Kentucky have included Lisa Harrison of Southern High School (Girls’ Basketball, 1989), Jaime Walz of Highlands (Girls’ Basketball, 1996), and Tim Couch of Leslie Country (Football, 1996).
