The game tomorrow night with Kentucky vs. Louisville is going to be one of the best Sweet 16 games in a long time. It will be a battle until the final whistle. Players will be emotionally charged, fans will be yelling at the top of their lungs and coaches will be barking at the refs. One thing it wont be is a was against Rick Pitino vs. John Calipari.

There has been a lot made of the relationship between Cal and Pitino. One recruits one way, one the other. One loves social media, one thinks it is a tool of the devil. If you talk to fans and most media the two coaches are not fans of each other.

Apparently though it is not the case. In Indianapolis Thursday both coaches were asked about their relationship with each other. They also had an exchange in the hallway of Lucus Oil Stadium (see picture above by Jeff Goodman).

Pitino said of the perception of their relationship:

I don’t care about perception because perception is not reality. We’re friends. We respect each other’s programs very much and we’re friends in this business. And I certainly have great respect for what they’re accomplishing right now. But it really doesn’t matter what perception is because perception is not reality in this world.

Calipari said of his relationship with Pitino:

I would say we’re friends. I mean, he and I have we were in touch throughout the year back and forth. He’d throw something at me, I’d throw something at him. Different things about our teams.

Rick and John have known each other since Cal was 15 in a basketball camp. Both have developed their teams to be some of the best in the nation. Apparently they are “friends”.

I am not too sure what to make of these comments, I can tell you they will not be friends Friday night at 9:45pm.
