Rick Pitino has two 7-footers and a 6’10″ player coming in the 2014 class, that is if recent commit Anas Osama Mahmoud signs. That is a lot of size, which is good with Stephen Van Treese and perhaps Montrezl Harrell leaving after the season. According to 247Sports.com, Pitino is still looking at some power forwards. He watched JUCO PF Willie Atwood Thursday.
Atwood plays for Connors State CC in Oklahoma. He has offers from Arkansas, Florida State, Western Kentucky, Auburn and many more D-I schools. The 6’8″, 215 lbs. PF is averaging 21 points and nine rebounds this season. He was named Region II Player of the Year as well.
Atwood played high school ball at Melrose High in Memphis, TN., the same high school as junior PG Chris Jones.
Rick Pitino is also planning on watching Jackson Davis Friday in Lexington, KY.. Davis, who plays at Lafayette High School, has been getting a lot of interest lately. The 6’8″, 220 lbs. senior is considered the 70th-best PF in the 2014 class by 247Sports.com.
So why is Pitino looking for another player for the 2014 class? It could be that Mahmoud might not be eligible to sign with the Cardinals. They tried to pick him up in December, but there was transcript issues. Could also be that someone is planning on leaving the team, Kevin Ware perhaps? Maybe there is another player who is thinking about going pro?
Louisville will have six scholarships open, once again that is if Harrell leaves. Tim Henderson, Van Treese, Russ Smith, Luke Hancock are all guaranteed openings. Also Chane Behanan opened up one.
