Luke n Russ espn

One can use many words to describe Senior Day festivities at basketball arenas around the country but “emotional” is probably the most commonly used, and for good reason. As a coach and or player that spends countless hours with your team and fights through some of the most adverse times, it’s easy to see why it’s so hard to say goodbye to those people you’ve grown close to.

Rick Pitino has a special bond with Russ Smith

And, while most coaches hate sending any senior off, Rick Pitino has undoubtedly developed two of the more special relationships with seniors in each of the past two years in Peyton Siva and Russ Smith. Anyone who was there last year will never forget the emotion that overtook Pitino as he had to bail on his scripted speech and just announce Peyton’s name. I may be wrong here but I’m assuming you can expect something similar Saturday afternoon when Rick and fans watch Russ Smith walk onto the KFC Yum Center floor for the last time as a player.

The Cards will be honoring Luke Hancock, Tim Henderson and Stephan Van Treese along with Smith before they tip off at 2:06 PM against conference foe, Connecticut. It is also the annual “Wear Red for the Seniors” game, with Cardinal fans encouraged to wear red attire at the game. This group of seniors has been more successful than any other group in UofL history. If you missed the great piece on these fantastic seniors by our own Jon Hancock, you need to check it out here
